Little Deer

I found these sweet little fawns at a craft show I did. The vendor next to me was selling vintage knick knacks
and as soon as I saw these I knew I had to have them.
I love deer. Seems like they were quite trendy a few years ago along with owl, hedgehogs, and little birds. Now it's all about the fox!
But I am a faithful deer lover. I will never tire of my woodland friends!

                                                                    Deer Ashley

                                                                    Dumpster Diver

                                                                    Trafalgar Square
I've purchased this print and a few others from her. Terrific!

So are deer cliche? Just because something becomes really popular should we stop liking it? Should cupcakes be less cute because they were such a trend? I don't think so. Not if you liked them sincerely. But I can't help but be a little saddened when something becomes so popular and mainstream that it's everywhere. Then it gets a little cheapened. Spread a little thin. It was great when a handful of great bakers were elevating cupcakes to pastry art but now it seems that every person with a Kitchen Aid stand mixer is jumping on the sugar train. Owls were once a cute and quirky retro throwback but now they're just white noise. You know a trend is no longer "indie" when you see bedding of it at Wal-Mart.
Oh well. I don't want to be a high minded snob. I still like owls, cupcakes, deer, and Amy Butler fabric. And Nirvana was still, well Nirvana, even after they went mainstream. Things become trendy because people like them and that's a good thing. Maybe the next trendy critter will be bats and I can say with certainty that I will sit that trend out.

The Idea Room: Gabe's Gift--Amanda {Today's Top 20}

It's Saturday....I should be out Junking

Ah, Saturday morning. My favorite time to check the classifieds and map my route for a morning of junking. Oh but wait, I live in NE Ohio. It's January. We don't have any garage, rummage, or yard sales this time of year. We're too busy being arse deep in snow. So until the March thaw, I'll have to be content with window shopping other vintage shops online. Sometimes a good oggling is enough for me!

At the top of my wishlist to find this spring........

                                                                  Skeleton keys.
                                                           Awesome. Endless possibilities.
I could kick myself for all the boxes of keys
I passed up over the years before I started selling.

Sewing machine cabinet drawers. Here's another example
of many prior missed opportunities. I've passed on so many
broken down, but with perfectly good drawers, sewing
machines. Before I discovered Esty, I thought I was
the only person kooky enough to find beauty and function
in an old drawer. Well lo and behold it turns there are lots
of kooky folks out there. Thank heavens!

TV Lamps. Back when tv's were first common,
people thought it was necessary to place a small lamp
atop the televsion to protect the eyes from the light of the tv.
So small decorative lamps were made for that sole purpose.
But unlike keys and drawers, these suckers are hard to find.
I've been junking for a long time and I've only ever found one.
But it was a black panther, which was apparently really popular
because there are a slew of them on Etsy. But it just reminded me
too much of that part in Anchor Man when they "musk up" with that
Sex Panther cologne. No thanks.
This one, however, would make me squeal with joy!

Ironstone. I never get tired of this classic workhorse china.
And the more age it shows the better.

Needlepoint pillows. So lovely and cheerful. I love thinking
about all the time and effort someone put into creating these little works of art.

But for now I'll have to be happy to daydream of the coming of Spring....to
hear the birds chirping, the flowers waking from their wintery sleep, the lengthening
of the day, and mostly, my favorite sign of spring,

Everything Old is New Again

My husband and I were watching TV last night and saw an infomercial for an "amazing  new product".
This apparatus could serve as a colander and go from a pot of boiling water to the sink and vice versa. It had this clever collabsible design.......do you know what it was? No? One of these.
Yup. A good old fashioned egg basket. I've sold vintage versions of these in my shop! My husband and I looked at eashother like "you've gotta be kidding me." He said "Wow honey, don't we have two of those in the chicken coop? And we've just been using them to gather eggs!"
Who knew we had a revolutionary new product just lying around.
But I am not surprised. A lot of early innovations are being brought back, which is awesome. It just really annoys me when they call it new!

A few other old/new things.......

Central vaccums  came back in the 80's and 90's as a selling point in high end homes but they have been around since 1902 or earlier!

Fancy Dancy Showers, they seem so innovative and new....check this one out, it's from the early 1900's!

Built in ironing boards...so smart! I hate the sound of mine opening...like nails on a chalkboard!

I do not know this nice fellow. Pictures of built in ironing boards are kinda
hard to come by. I had to use what I could find. But isn't it awesome? It even has a pretty
cabinet!

Bread drawers and all the bells and whistles of Hoosier cabinets. Talk about efficient!

                                                               Hoosiercabinet

Lots of gadgets and storage bins from Ikea just to equal what you had in one cabinet.

This is genius. Every kitchen needs a holding pen for little kids! I'm
allowed to say that, I'm a mom.
                                                                     Hooked on Houses

                                                                  Clever use of space

Isn't that the cutest kitchen bar?

And I would love to have an office area in my kitchen like this. Looks
like the vintage woman was more modern than we thought.
This kitchen is from 1948.

A particulary wonderful treasury

I am on this super awesome Etsy team. We make treasuries with the hopes of getting on the front page....a big deal in Etsy land. We always use at least six of our team members items. It's amazing what these talented people come up with. One of my team mates used an item of mine in a treasury I particulary loved. Just right.

Hello and Welcome!

Ahhh, a new year, a new blog! Hi there, my name is Stephanie and I love vintage. I'm starting this blog as a way to share and learn more about all the vintage treasures I find. I'll also throw in some other inspiring bits and plenty of eye candy. We all love eye candy.

In case you're interested, I'm a 32 year old stay at home mom of a four year boy who loves dirt and John Deere tractors and a 2 year old daughter who charms everyone she meets and loves to draw.....on everything......like walls.
I'm married to a goood guy and loving dad. Our home,or "Ye Olde Brick" as I like ot call it, was built during the Civil War. It is the source of endless love and frustration. More on the house later.
I have always loved old things. I mean really. I was the eight year old who had strong opinions on preserving old homes and who'd rather go to the living history museum than an amusement park.
So now I run an Etsy shop where I can share and sell all the great old goodies I find. I get to snatch up all the treasures I come across without my husband threatening to throw me out for bringing home more "junk".
I'm just restocking the shop honey. I promise not to pimp my shop...too much.
Oh, and I also have another Etsy shop selling pure soy candles, tarts, lip balms, lotions, roll on perfume, etc. that I make in my kitchen.

Alright then, let's get started! A little inspiration!

I just photographed a small lot of vintage costume jewelry for my shop. One item was this tiny teapot charm that is ridiculously cute. Everything is cute in miniature. Well almost.

But first, a bit of background. Charms are not always just meaningless trinkets. There is actually a very interesting and long history behind them. They can tell a story, protect the wearer, serve as a reminder. Check out this article on a brief history on this diminutive jewelry. My Mothers Charms

And it comes with three vintage brooches!

Some other sweet charms..

                                                                        CosmicFirefly

This is awesome although these old scuba helmets always scare the heck outta me.
                          But this is just cool.

                                                                lunashineshine
Think I'll sit in my tiny chair and pour from my tiny teapot.

                                                                  morikaty
                                                Perfect companion to my teapot!

These are insanely awesome.

So cute! And you get five of them!

                                                                                  CuteAbility

                                                                   kawaiidesune

You can't do a post about cute miniatures and not include some
Kawaii! I gurantee my kids would try to steal this from me!
